A central part of travelling is observing and interacting with people. I am rather shy and find it difficult to broach the private space of others. People are less suspicious of the camera in Asia and Africa than in the West, so it is naturally easier to take portraits there. Photographing people is not my priority, but if I do, I like to show them in their surroundings. So the photos are basically snapshots, created out of the moment and a special situation. The best pictures however are the ones I never took. The first photographs on this page are of friends and acquaintances.
