Before one sets foot in the United States for the first time, one has been heavily influenced by its culture, films, TV and consumerist lifestyle. My father spent eight years there: I might have been an American. Naturally I had to see for myself. Most of my trips were to the West, where the landscapes are spectacular. Always on the move, in Greyhound buses and rental cars, I never stayed anywhere long. Somehow I came to document the strange and wonderful, and the remnants of an earlier age. Modern America didn't interest me that much.
