Chinese and Japanese letters have an embedded graphic beauty. I have been intrigued by calligraphy and traditional paintings from those cultures for a long time. Malaysia has a sizeable Chinese community that was allowed to keep its identy, contrary to Thailand. Many of the old Chinese shopfronts with their names in plaster have survived, as well as their lovingly painted shutters made of bamboo. When I first came to Asia, I took a lot of pictures of stunning examples and am still doing it. However digitally printed signposts are taking over now for good.
