Big sister is watching you. Sometimes the only human element in a place is an advertising poster with a happy face on it. Of course it isn't a person, only colour dots printed on paper. It is make-belief. It is fantasy. These promises and the world of hard consumerism that they represent seem to have taken over everywhere. From my balcony in Bangkok I could see about 50 big billboards. The new shopping centres are the smartest places in town, and when I asked girls about their favourite pastime they often replied: "shopping!"
