Isaan is the name of Thailand's populated but poor Northeast. Young people from Isaan have been moving to Bangkok and other hotspots to make a living for ages. Children usually grow up with the grandparents in Isaan, while their mothers (and sometimes fathers) work in the south and send money back home. This is almost mythical, to the core of getting a grasp of Thailand. Men from Isaan build the skycrapers, many women work in the sex business. I accompanied my wife home in 2009 and took pictures of life in her village and on a trip along the Mekong River.
